A Passkey is a new, more secure way to sign in to apps and websites. It is a digital credential that allows you to authenticate without a password. Instead of typing a password, you use your device's built-in authentication, like a fingerprint, facial recognition, or a PIN.

Passkeys are much more secure than passwords because they use public key cryptography. When you create a Passkey, your device generates a unique pair of cryptographic keys: a public key and a private key. The public key is stored on our server, while the private key remains securely on your device.

Because the private key never leaves your device and is never shared with us, Passkeys are resistant to phishing, a common attack where malicious actors try to trick you into revealing your login information. Even if our systems were breached, the attacker would only have access to public keys, which are useless without the private keys on your device.

Passkeys are not the same as traditional 2FA, but they provide a similar or even stronger level of security. Traditional 2FA adds a second step to a password-based login, such as a code sent via SMS or an authenticator app.

Passkeys, on the other hand, are a complete replacement for the password. The authentication process is a single step that is inherently multi-factor, as it combines "something you have" (your device) with "something you are" (biometrics like your fingerprint or face) or "something you know" (your device's PIN).

Setting up a Passkey is simple. When you're in your account settings, you will see an option to "Add" Follow the on-screen prompts, which will guide you through using your device's authentication method (e.g., Touch ID, Face ID, or Windows Hello) to create and save the Passkey.

Passkeys are supported by most modern devices and operating systems, including iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows. They are also compatible with major browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. You can use a Passkey on any device that supports the FIDO2 standard.

If you lose a device with a Passkey, your account remains secure because the Passkey can't be used without your biometrics or PIN. Additionally, Passkeys can be synced across your devices through your device's cloud provider (e.g., Apple Keychain or Google Password Manager).

This means you can use another synced device to access your account. If you don't have a synced device, you can use a backup method, such as a password or a recovery code, to regain access.
